The Minidoka Project

A collaborative effort between the National Park Service and Buhl School District.

Buhl, ID- The project began in 2012 as part of the GEAR UP Program (a federal career and college readiness grant for which service learning is a key component). Adrea Storey, grant coordinator for Buhl’s GEAR UP Program created the project to raise awareness of the local historic site.

The local impact of Japanese internment in America during WWII has never been covered in depth as part of the curriculum in Buhl.  With Minidoka Relocation Center practically being in Buhl’s backyard (a mere 30 miles from the school) Storey felt it was a subject that deserved more attention. Working with National Parks Service and eighth grade Social Studies teacher Theresa Silvester, a trunk curriculum on Minidoka and Japanese Relocation Efforts was created.
